Cisco VIRL (Virtual Internet Routing Lab) is a software tool that Cisco developed to build and run network simulations without the need for physical hardware. It is similar to the enterprise version Cisco Modeling Lab (CML), for personal use. VIRL license has to be acquired directly from Cisco at virl.cisco.com.

No. With the “Course with Lab Access” option, we provide free 7-day lab access with course purchase. After the free lab access time is up, you may choose to either get your own VIRL license and lab setup or continue with our “Managed VIRL Lab” which costs $199/month. You have lifetime access to the course materials and videos regardless you use our lab or not.

The VIRL Book and Lab Guide bundle, Video Course and Course with Lab Access are all one-time cost. If you want to continue using the managed Cisco VIRL Lab, it costs $199/month, with minimum two-month commitment.

If you wanted to learn about network simulation with Cisco VIRL, either for certification study or real-world scenario testing, the “Course with Lab Access” is a perfect fit. You’ll get the VIRL fundamentals book with lab guide, and the online videos to follow along. We’ll also provide you with 7-day lab access to a fully licensed VIRL lab setup with no additional charge.

The lab consists of a Windows front-end server (used as a desktop environment) and a fully licensed Cisco VIRL back-end server. The environment is dedicated for your use, not shared. The lab environment has been fully tested and performance tuned. All lab tools and topology files have been preloaded and ready to go.

Absolutely. It is encouraged to use your own lab environment if you already have one running.  In this case, we recommend the “Cisco VIRL Video Course”. You can follow the lab guide and the videos to configure the network in your own lab environment.

When the 7-day free Lab Access time is up, all servers will be reimaged and repurposed for others. Be sure to back up your data and VIRL topologies you have created on the Windows server. (No files or customer data are stored on the VIRL back-end server.) If you fail to back up your files, the data are lost permanently. If you wish to continue using the lab environment, please contact us at least 48 hours in advance and we’ll be happy to convert you to a monthly lab rental plan.
